The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game played between two or more players with chips (representing money) that are placed into the central “pot” during betting intervals, according to the rules of the variant being played. Each player has two cards dealt to them, and the goal is to make the best five-card hand using those two personal cards plus the five community cards on the table.
At the beginning of each round, one or more players are required to place forced bets (an ante and/or blind bet). The dealer then shuffles the cards, and the player on the chair to their right cuts. The dealer then deals each player a number of cards, usually three at a time, in a process called dealing the flop, turning, and then river.
After each deal, the players will decide whether to continue placing bets (or raising their existing bets) or to fold their cards and discard them into the draw stack. If they choose to raise their bets, other players may choose to call their bets or raise them themselves.
Once all bets are placed, the highest-ranking hand wins the pot. Standard poker hands consist of a straight (five consecutive cards of the same rank), a flush (five matching cards of the same suit), three of a kind, and a pair. Ties are broken by the highest unmatched cards or secondary pairs (two matching cards of the same rank plus two other unmatched cards). While luck does play a role in poker, the game is also heavily based on skill and understanding your opponents.
