Martin Scorsese’s Casino takes the basic formulas of his other gangster films – Goodfellas and Goodfellas II – and applies them to a different type of story, about how people rise to the top of their respective industries only to fall back down through a combination of greed, lust, and stupidity. While De Niro and Joe Pesci are great, it’s Sharon Stone who steals the film as a feisty, addicted-to-anything femme fatale that most men would love to tame (and then immediately regret it). If you see the movie as a study of destruction and betrayal, it’s an astonishing piece of work.
